The History Of Our Building

ATIKA is a leading vintage store in East London, located at 55–59 Hanbury Street, just moments from Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market in the heart of the historic East End. Our building sits within one of London’s oldest and most culturally rich districts — a neighbourhood shaped by centuries of immigration, entrepreneurship and creativity. Today, that same spirit of ambition and craftsmanship continues at ATIKA, making us a destination for vintage fashion in London.
Before ATIKA became a go-to vintage shop near Brick Lane, the site was home to Harry Epstein Ltd, a world-renowned manufacturer of bespoke furniture that occupied the building for most of the 20th century. Founded by master craftsman Harry Epstein and later run by his sons Harry and Lou, the company became celebrated as some of the finest cabinet makers in Europe.
Inspired by the 1925 Paris Decorative Arts exhibition, the Epstein family helped pioneer what became known as Art Deco furniture in Britain. At the time, the style was referred to as “Jazz Modern,” long before the term Art Deco was widely adopted. Their bold designs and meticulous craftsmanship established them as leaders of the English Deco movement, producing pieces that remain highly sought after today.

Former employees have shared that clients were said to include international icons such as Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow, further cementing the building’s place in design history. While tastes varied — from Art Deco to fine French reproductions — the reputation for quality and style was undeniable.
Today, ATIKA continues that legacy of creativity and craftsmanship as one of the largest and most distinctive vintage clothing stores near Spitalfields. Just steps from Brick Lane’s famous markets and independent boutiques, we offer a carefully curated selection of vintage fashion, reworked pieces and contemporary brands — all housed within a building rich in East London heritage.
If you’re searching for a vintage shop in East London, retro clothing near Brick Lane, or a unique shopping experience in Spitalfields, ATIKA combines history, design and modern style under one iconic roof.
